Fire near Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura oil hub is reportedly contained after an attack in the region

A blaze near Ras Tanura was contained hours after it broke out, Türkiye Today reported. Bloomberg said how much damage it did is still unclear.

Why it matters: Ras Tanura shipped more than 5 million barrels of crude a day before the conflict, so any damage there could matter for oil supply.

A fire broke out early Tuesday near Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura, one of the world's largest oil export terminals, after an attack in the region, Bloomberg reported, and the blaze was contained hours later, according to Türkiye Today. Bloomberg said the extent of the damage was still unclear, Türkiye Today reported, and a Newsquawk headline carried the containment as "reports suggest."

Ras Tanura is one of the world's largest oil export terminals and shipped more than 5 million barrels of crude a day before the regional conflict, according to Türkiye Today. The site also holds Saudi Arabia's largest domestic refinery, with about 550,000 barrels a day of capacity. And to get around the Strait of Hormuz, the kingdom has been rerouting around 4 million barrels a day through its East-West pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, which has itself come under attack several times.

Who attacked, and with what, is less settled. The Saudi-led coalition's spokesman, Major-General Turki al-Maliki, said air defenses intercepted missiles aimed at the Eastern Province, causing no casualties, and drones headed toward the kingdom's southern regions, Al Jazeera reported with Reuters. There was no immediate comment from the Houthis. Türkiye Today added a caution: "The coalition's statement did not establish a direct link between those interceptions and the fire reported near Ras Tanura."

The attacks came as senior Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani officials met their Iranian counterparts in Tehran to calm the wider conflict, Al Jazeera reported. For anyone with money in energy, the open question is the one Bloomberg flagged: how much damage the fire actually did.
