As its $1 deal ends, Anthropic gives government buyers 40% off Claude
A new OneGov agreement with the GSA bills government buyers for the Claude tokens they use, at a 40% discount, and opens the deal to state and local governments.

Why it matters: Anthropic estimates the discounts will save the government $1 billion, and agencies' Claude bills now scale with the tokens they use.

Anthropic's $1 government promo is about to end, and what comes next is a discount. Government buyers now get 40% off token-based usage across Claude models available to the government, under an expanded OneGov agreement, with no minimum purchase, the General Services Administration said Tuesday.
Anthropic says the discount covers Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API. It applies to direct purchases now and to purchases through cloud providers "in the coming months." Anthropic, in its post on X and on its site, says the deal also reaches state, local, tribal and territorial governments. GSA's release lists federal, state, local and tribal governments.
Whose numbers are whose: Anthropic estimates the discounts will save the government $1 billion, and says about 500 US government organizations now use Claude. GSA says OneGov as a whole has saved more than $1.8 billion since it started, about $1.6 billion of it through its AI deals.
The clock was running. The old Claude deal, which gave federal agencies Claude for Enterprise and Claude for Government for $1 per agency under GSA's August 2025 agreement, expires Oct. 31, Nextgov/FCW reported. OpenAI agreed to a similar 50% discount on token-based usage for government buyers in a 27-month OneGov deal that started this month, Nextgov said. Google is offering Gemini for $0.47 per agency until Nov. 15, according to FedScoop.
Pay-as-you-go pricing has a catch, too. Forrester's Tracy Woo, quoted by FedScoop, warned: "A small group of power users can drive a disproportionate share of costs, turning successful AI adoption into both a productivity win and a budgeting challenge." Claude's $1 promo era is ending, and from here agencies pay for what they use.
