Warren presses Anthropic on the ‘existential’ AI risks in its own IPO filing

The Senate Banking Committee's top Democrat sent Dario Amodei 10 multipart questions on safety and market risk, citing the risk factors in Anthropic's S-1.

Why it matters: Anthropic's IPO, which analysts expect to raise up to $100 billion, now faces questions on safety and market risk from the Senate Banking Committee's top Democrat.

For information only, not investment advice.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren wants answers from Anthropic before its shares start trading, and her evidence is the company's own IPO paperwork. In an 11-page letter to CEO Dario Amodei, the top Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee cited the preliminary registration statement, 90 pages of which were devoted to risk factors, Spectrum News reported.

That filing, made Oct. 26, warns that sufficiently advanced AI systems could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity without proper safeguards, and says those concerns have been raised inside Anthropic itself. The company has applied to list on the Nasdaq under the symbol ANT.

“I believe the risks presented by this technology demand greater scrutiny before they become intertwined with the public capital markets, which could further escalate both public safety and systemic financial risks,” Warren wrote, according to Spectrum News.

Her worry runs past safety to your portfolio: she argued the company's sheer size and big share-price swings could roil markets once the stock lands in retirement accounts. She also questioned how Anthropic, a Delaware public benefit corporation, can meet its duties without addressing the risks it lists.

The letter poses 10 multipart questions, including how Anthropic would report AI models autonomously carrying out cyberattacks. Warren asked for answers by Nov. 3, CFO Dive reported.

Spectrum News, citing Yahoo Finance, said the IPO could come around the week of Nov. 16, and said analysts expect it to raise up to $100 billion. Anthropic did not respond to Spectrum News' request for comment before its story was published.
