Coinbase launches its 15-minute crypto bets again, still settles them on a minute you didn't watch

The up-or-down contracts pay $1 or $0, and per Vertex Analytics they settle on a 60-second index average, not the last tick on your screen.

Why it matters: Coinbase is pushing 15-minute, $1-or-$0 crypto contracts whose settlement on a 60-second index average can differ from the price users see.

Coinbase ($COIN) has launched its 15-minute crypto prediction markets again, a bold move for a product that, according to Crypto Briefing, launched on October 6, 2026. The exchange first unveiled "crypto binaries" in a June 16 blog post, then turned them on in October, and on Oct. 24 its own X account announced that live crypto price markets are on Coinbase. At this pace the launches will soon come every 15 minutes too. Each bet, as our report explains, has only two outcomes.

Those outcomes are $1 and $0. Per Crypto Briefing, if your call on BTC, ETH, SOL or another supported coin is right, the contract pays $1. If it's wrong, it pays $0, "and there is no partial credit for being close." Contract durations start at 15 minutes, roughly the time it takes a person to decide on a sandwich.

The twist is in the finish line. According to Vertex Analytics, the bitcoin contracts don't settle on the last price you see on Coinbase. Vertex says the contract uses a CF Benchmarks index and a 60-second averaging window, and that a late move above the target may not be enough to pull the full-minute average above it. In other words, you can watch the chart cross your line and still lose. The race isn't over when you cross the finish line. It's over when an index finishes averaging whether you were near it.

"I was up at the buzzer and down at the average," said a 15-minute candle who asked not to be named because it ceased to exist shortly after the interview. "Coinbase told me it was a prediction market. Nobody told me the prediction was about a different minute."

Vertex also notes the contracts appearing through Coinbase are Kalshi-listed, so the exchange's job is mostly the button. Coinbase says in its June post that it has seen "incredible demand" since opening prediction markets access earlier this year. The one place the button doesn't work, per Coinbase's own disclosure, is Nevada, a state that already knows a thing or two about games where the house writes the rules.
