Coinbase's 15-minute crypto prediction markets settle at $1 or $0

A new Coinbase post pitches up-or-down contracts on BTC, ETH and SOL, but they aren't new, and bitcoin's 15-minute markets may settle on a different price than the one on your screen.

Coinbase ($COIN) is pushing its crypto price prediction markets again. In a post on X on Saturday evening, the exchange said live crypto price markets are on Coinbase and let users "trade your prediction with 15 min to daily timeframes on BTC, ETH or SOL."

The post reads like a launch, but the product isn't new. Coinbase announced these "crypto binaries" in a June 16 blog post, and Crypto Briefing reported that the live markets launched on Oct. 6.

The mechanics are simple. Each position is a binary event contract: according to Crypto Briefing, it pays $1 if your call is right and $0 if it's wrong, with no partial credit for being close. You can fund positions with USD or USDC, and contracts start at 15 minutes. The X post names bitcoin, ether and solana; Crypto Briefing lists BNB among the supported assets too.

One detail worth knowing before you click the button: research firm Vertex Analytics says the short-duration contracts are listed by Kalshi, and that bitcoin's 15-minute markets settle on CF Benchmarks' Bitcoin Real Time Index, not on the price shown on Coinbase's own spot chart.

Coinbase says its US prediction markets are offered through Coinbase Financial Markets, an NFA member firm, and aren't available in Nevada. The company also says it has seen "incredible demand" since launching prediction markets access this year. That's Coinbase's claim.
