OpenAI buys Orchestra Bio, a startup whose AI agents babysit drug programs

The ChatGPT maker is folding Orchestra's scheduling-and-logistics agents into Rosalind. It didn't say what it paid. Rival Anthropic made its own biotech buy in April, reportedly for about $400 million.

OpenAI has bought Orchestra Bio, a San Francisco startup whose AI agents help drug companies keep development programs on schedule. Axios reported it first, as an exclusive; OpenAI confirmed the deal and Orchestra's own site says it is "joining OpenAI" to continue its mission. The price? Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Orchestra handles the unglamorous part of making medicine. TechCrunch says its agents manage "the minutiae of drug discovery operations, from tracking finances to resolving scheduling issues with clinical trials." OpenAI's example: when a failed manufacturing batch delays a trial, the agents flag which timelines are hit and compare responses, and people make the call. The team goes into Rosalind, OpenAI's life-sciences models and tools. OpenAI says a new drug takes roughly 10 to 15 years to develop; whether agents shorten that is still a claim, not a result.

Founded in fall 2022, Orchestra reportedly raised about $20 million, per Decrypt, citing Caplight data. Investor lists differ, but Andreessen Horowitz and 8VC appear in both TechCrunch's and Decrypt's. It's not to be confused with Orchestra BioMed, an unrelated Nasdaq-listed device maker.

The bigger picture: the AI labs are shopping for biotech. Anthropic bought Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million in April, Axios reported, citing The Information. In January, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar wrote that licensing, IP-based agreements and outcome-based pricing will share in the value AI creates in drug discovery, Decrypt reported. That's a hint that subscriptions aren't the whole plan.

Public-market footnote: Veeva Systems ($VEEV) shares moved off their session highs after the Axios report, TheFly said. That's timing, not proof the deal moved the stock.
