Five widely followed companies reported quarterly results this week. Pfizer raised its outlook, Shopify came in just under Wall Street's numbers, and Block's adjusted profit topped estimates. Palantir and Apple, which reported Monday, are summarized at the end.
Pfizer raises its full-year forecast
Pfizer's third-quarter revenue totaled $16.6 billion, relatively flat compared with a year earlier, according to its earnings release filed with the SEC. Excluding its Covid vaccine Comirnaty and Covid pill Paxlovid, revenue grew 7% operationally, and revenue from its launched and acquired products grew 32%.
The drugmaker raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $62.0 billion to $64.0 billion, from $60.5 billion to $62.5 billion, and raised adjusted earnings guidance to $2.95 to $3.05 a share, from $2.80 to $3.00. CNBC noted the low end of the new sales range would be roughly flat or slightly below 2025 revenue of $62.6 billion.
Shopify grows fast but lands just under estimates
Shopify, whose software runs online stores for merchants, said revenue grew 32% with a 22% free cash flow margin. President Harley Finkelstein said, "We powered $119 billion in GMV," referring to gross merchandise volume, the total value of orders facilitated through its platform.
Against expectations, the quarter was a near miss. Revenue of $3.74 billion came in just below LSEG estimates of $3.75 billion, CNBC reported, and GMV of $119.15 billion missed StreetAccount estimates of $120.03 billion. Shopify said it expects fourth-quarter revenue growth in the "low thirties" range year over year.
Block's adjusted profit beats
Block, the company behind the Square payment terminals and the Cash App money app, reported third-quarter net income of $565.6 million, or 92 cents a share, according to the Associated Press. Adjusted earnings were $1.13 a share, above the $1.02 average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research. Revenue was $6.72 billion, against $6.62 billion expected.
Block said it expects earnings of $1.15 a share for the December quarter and $4.15 a share for the full year.
Palantir and Apple
Palantir said revenue nearly doubled from a year earlier and passed $2 billion for the first time, and its US commercial revenue topped government revenue for the first time, CNBC reported. US commercial bookings, measured as total contract value, were $1.5 billion, up 11% from last year, after a record $2.1 billion in the second quarter.
Apple reported better-than-expected revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter but fell short of estimates on iPad sales and issued a margin forecast that disappointed investors, CNBC reported. It was the first report since John Ternus took over as CEO from Tim Cook in September, and Apple said memory costs were higher than in the June quarter.
