Why it matters: Democrats take over House committees and subpoena power in January, and investors are weighing what that means for regulation, taxes and AI.

Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate in Tuesday's midterm elections, Reuters reported. Washington will have divided government after two years in which Republicans ran Congress.
NBC News projects Democrats will win about 255 House seats, well above the 218 needed for a majority. They take over the chamber on Jan. 3, along with its committees and subpoena power. Senate races in Mississippi, Michigan and Alaska had not been called early Wednesday.
President Donald Trump accepted the outcome. He said he would work with Democrats on issues such as immigration but threatened to veto any "insane" bills they pass.
For markets, the open question is what a Democratic Congress means for regulation and taxes. US stock futures fell sharply at first, then stabilized, Reuters reported. Investors weighed tougher regulation, higher taxes and more oversight of AI and crypto.
The significance of these midterm elections is more like a referendum on AI than a referendum on Trump.
AI is one area drawing scrutiny. Democrats made gains in Texas and Georgia, two key states for data centers, where many Americans worry about the facilities' energy costs and environmental strain, Reuters reported. Shares of the biggest cloud-computing companies traded lower on Europe's Tradegate platform.
